Scarlett Johansson, sex, and the decline of Hollywood

See, this is part of the reason why, if I were to somehow ever make it big as a filmmaker, I would never want to work with "celebrities". I'm sick to death of the cult of celebrity that pervades American society. This stupid thing about believing that someone has to be famous and in the spotlight before they're supposed to have a life worth living. Well, screw that. I don't want to be a celebrity: I want to be a character. And I want to surround my life with real living characters: people who are confident about being their own selves without having to use fame and fortune for a frame of reference. Because being a celebrity is no guarantee that you've got it all together where it counts...

...as Scarlett Johansson is now illustrating. The actress is saying that everyone should be tested for the AIDS virus at least twice a year. Here's some of what she said...

"I get tested for HIV twice a year. . . One has to be socially aware. It's part of being a decent human to be tested for STDs. It's just disgusting behaviour when people don't. It's so irresponsible."

Dear Miss Johansson: if you stopped trying to #*$& everything that moves, maybe you wouldn't have to get an HIV test twice a year. As it is, some people with a little more self-control than that won't ever have to worry about getting tested.

Y'know, this really is one of the tell-tale signs of societal decadence. As a culture becomes more permissive and loosening of sexual restraint, that culture stagnates at an increasing rate. Ever stop to think that maybe there's a correlation between how much screwing-around goes on in Hollyweird and how many movies coming out lately are third-rate remakes?

The film industry as we've come to know it is dying. Because between this devil-may-care attitude toward sex from Scarlett Johansson and the Scientology nuttiness of Tom Cruise, Hollywood has completely divorced itself from the mindset of traditional American decency. And what's going to happen across the next ten or twenty years is that you're going to start seeing a homegrown film industry spring up all across America, led by people that aren't consumed by the cult of celebrity. There really will be, I believe, a renaissance of film production... that will be free of the limitations that come with material excess and carnality. You tired of the vapid crap coming out of Hollywood? Had it with empty-headed celebrities who don't know what they're talking about? Then make your own movie with some REAL people! Lord knows you'll prolly come up with a hella lot more compelling story than what the suits in Tinseltown have done lately.
