Dad in his knife shop

About 3:30 this afternoon Lisa and I went to my parents' house. Dad was out in his knife shop. I walked inside and found Dad in the following pose amidst all his tools and just so happened to have my digital camera with me...

Here's some of the stuff he's been working on lately...

For how long has your Father been making his own knives and from who did he learn the craft from?

He started playing around with the idea of making knives about 20 years ago, but it's only been in the past 8 or 9 that he got serious. As to where he learned the craft from, a lot of it has been self-taught trial and error and reading lots of books on the subject. But he's also been fortunate enough to have gone to several instructional courses taught by some of the most well-known artists in the trade. Dad will always be able to say that he learned a lot of his stuff from Bill Moran, probably the most well-known American knifemaker, who sadly passed away earlier this year. There's a pic of Dad and Moran and fellow knifemaker George Herron hanging in his shop that he's quite proud of :-)
